Taylor Duane attorneys co-chair Boston premiere of documentary film depicting media portrayal of women

BOSTON (Nov. 9, 2011) – Tamara Smith Holtslag and Lindsey Gil co-chaired the first Boston screening of Miss Representation, a powerful documentary addressing the impact of how women are portrayed in the media.

The film challenges the often disparaging portrayal of women and girls and how that contributes to relatively low numbers of women in positions of power and influence in the United States. It premiered at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, and recently premiered on OWN Network (Oprah Winfrey Network), which is rebroadcasting the film Nov. 12.

Sponsored by the Women’s Bar Association of Massachusetts (WBA), the screening was followed by a panel discussion of the film and potential action steps to change the way media portrays women. A standing-room crowd of professionals and students attended the event, which was planned by Smith Holtslag, a chairperson of the WBA’s Public Relations Committee, and Gil, a member of the Committee. The screening, held at Suffolk University Law School, was co-sponsored by a number of local organizations.

“We were pleased to organize this important event for the WBA and the greater Boston community,” said Smith Holtslag, a partner in the Boston office. “This thought-provoking film generated a robust discussion among the panel and audience members following the screening. It is really a call to action for all those concerned about the advancement of women and girls in our society. Despite the terrific gains women have made in the workplace and beyond, this well-researched documentary shows how much remains to be done.”
